USCIS Introduces Premium Processing and Online Filing for F-1 Students on OPT and STEM Extensions

Revised Form I-9

USCIS has announced the expansion of premium processing for certain F-1 students seeking Optional Practical Training (OPT) and STEM OPT extensions. This expansion will occur in phases, and F-1 students in certain categories who have a pending Form I-765 may request a premium processing upgrade by submitting Form I-907 beginning March 6. These categories include Pre-Completion OPT, Post-Completion OPT, and 24-Month Extension of OPT for STEM students. Beginning April 3, F-1 students in these categories may file Form I-907 and Form I-765 together to request premium processing. It is important to note that students should not file for premium processing before the specified dates.

How to File Form 1-907?

To file Form I-907 online, applicants must create a USCIS online account, which also allows them to track the status of their immigration request and communicate with USCIS.

The creation of a USCIS online account is free of charge and provides a range of features that allow applicants to communicate with USCIS through a secure inbox and respond to Requests for Evidence online, as well as track the status of their USCIS immigration request during the adjudication process.

The phased expansion of premium processing is part of USCIS’ ongoing efforts to streamline the immigration system and reduce burdens. With the addition of online filing for Form I-907, there are now 16 forms available for online filing, and applicants can access them on the Forms Available to File Online page. However, USCIS still accepts paper versions of all forms via mail. In FY 2022, over 1.8 million online applications, petitions, and requests were filed, which marks a 53% increase from the 1.2 million filed in FY 2021.
