About Trenton

The capital of New Jersey, Trenton, is a historic city with a strong history and a promising future. Trenton is situated in Mercer County in Central New Jersey on the Delaware River, which is conveniently close to New York and Philadelphia. During the Great Migration of the early 20th century, many African Americans relocated to New Jersey in search of employment, finding work in the state’s industrial hubs.

The Great Depression’s entrance in the 1930s dealt the black community a crippling economic blow because black unemployment was roughly twice that of whites at the time. After years of advocacy, New Jersey now boasts the nation’s toughest equal pay statute and is one of just a few states to protect people based on their sexual orientation. Trenton city is also home to a number of outdoor parks and other attractions, theaters, and renowned history, science, and art museums.

The first settlement that would become Trenton was founded by Quakers in 1679 in the area then known as the Falls of Delaware, led by Mahlon Stacy from Handsworth, Sheffield, UK. Quakers were being persecuted in England at this time, and North America provided the perfect opportunity to exercise their religious freedom.

Trenton became New Jersey’s capital on November 25, 1790, and the city of Trenton was formed within Trenton Township on November 13, 1792. By 1719, the settlement was known as Trent-towne, after William Trent, one of its most essential landowners, who had acquired much of the surrounding territory from Stacy’s family. Later, Trenton was created by condensing this name.

George Washington’s first military triumph in the American Revolutionary War took place in this city. On December 26, 1776, Washington and his men crossed the chilly Delaware River to Trenton, where they beat the Hessian soldiers stationed there. After the war, in the months of November and December 1784, Trenton served as the nation’s temporary capital. Although the city was seen as the nation’s future capital, a place south of the Mason-Dixon line was preferred by the southern states.
